Saudi Arabia's Greenhouse Gas Crediting & Offsetting Mechanism

Saudi Arabia submitted its updated NDCs on 23 October 2021, more than doubling its 2030 aim at reducing, avoiding, and removing GHG emissions by 278 million tons of CO2eq annually, compared to an aim of 130 Mt CO2eq in the INDC .

The NDC lists various actions, plans, projects and measures, including:

1. Contribution to Economic Diversification

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Energy efficiency, particularly in the industry, buildings, and transport sectors.
RENEWABLE ENERGY
Renewable energy in the power sector, making up 50% of the electricity mix by 2030, and to generate green hydrogen.
CCUS
Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).
• CCUS Hubs    • Blue Hydrogen
UTILIZATION OF GAS
A switch from oil to gas in the electricity sector.
METHANE MANAGEMENT
A 30% reduction in global methane emissions by 2030 (compared to 2020 levels).

Generated credits that support the Kingdom’s NDCs will be tracked and reported as part of NDC efforts.
